Hello all,
Looking for help/advice/guidance.
I currently have a 1957 Beetle steering shaft in my vehicle and I am trying to utilize an earlier model three spoke steering wheel in the car. Unfortunately, the shaft and the steering column will no longer work as the “teeth” on the hub no longer align with the shaft. Is there an adapter available? Thanks to all in advance.
Regards
Mike

I do not recognize the Petri parts you have here, but to get the 3 spoke installed, you could just buy a correct used steering shaft out of a 1955 and older beetle here on thesamba and everything will bolt right in. Or, you could buy a 3 spoke steering wheel for a '56-'60 with the fine splines.
Other than these, I do not know. I thought that the big spline wheels would fit the fine spline steering wheels, but not fine spline to big spline shafts? Been a while since I've done this.

Best of luck.

I'm thinking you need to find a 3 spoke wheel from a later standard which probably had the right number of splines....

or find an early steering column

And the second ad is a very good option. I have some of thier steering wheels and they look like new VW steering wheels. Super nice!

They never changed the splines on the column through '59. At some point they doubled the teeth for better positioning of the wheel. I want to say the column is 24 and the later wheel is 48 but don't quote me on that. Any "flat" '59 and earlier wheel will fit on any early column.

Anyway, your column/shaft doesn't look like an early one, looks like a later one.

On June 7 th, 1957, VIN 1 568 040 the number of splines on steering wheel was changed to 48.

The shorter column with the later teething and deep center steering wheels came Aug 59 for the 60´models.

The steering column in pic is clearly the shorter one, for models 1960 onwards. This part has not only the wrong teething, it´s also too short for the older flat steering wheels.

Replace the whole column and tube including the horn-brush.
