The shroud that surrounds the EVC furnace also supports the hot air ducts for the furnace. In order to remove this shroud you need to slide the stock rear seat out of the way for access. In my van, with its platform bed, removing the seat base is a non-trivial task. My solution was to cut the shroud at the location where the shroud changes size for the hot air ducts. Now I can remove the shroud without having to move the seat base, and without disturbing the hot air ducts.

Hi, joining you from the other thread.
do you find it rattles or squeaks where the panels meet? _________________ 1984 Vanagon 1.9/4 speed

Nope. But then, the entire van rattles and squeaks! _________________ David

Let me expand on this a little bit.
I cut this panel with an oscillating multi-tool.
I have found that the panels in the 95 are thicker than the panels I have seen in later vans. I have seen later vans with such thin plastic that the bed near the back of the van is sagging. Panels that are so thin that you are sure they will snap as soon as they are removed. So I am not sure if you did this in a van with thin plastic how it would turn out.
I did not find that I needed to add a gap between the panels, or to add any material to the cut edge - like edging - after creating a gap (both options I thought I might need to explore). It seems to work just as it did before.
My platform bed still uses the shroud for the support in the back - on both the furnace and battery sides. _________________ David

Also joining from the other thread.....
Thanks for the detail. If squeaks or rattles are an issue after this modification, it seems like some grey T-moulding might solve the issue(s). _________________ Larry in OB

I'm upgrading the 12V electrics and replacing the furnace in my 1995 right now. Thanks for posting this, I think I will do this to mine. I couldn't believe how many screws had to be removed to gain access to the furnace/converter area. Not to mention having to disconnect all the hot-air ducts. |
