Bug starts but wont idle

Hi all, I just rebuilt the top end of my 1969 engine. I bought a brand new solex 30/31pict carb for it. It starts but will not idle. If I keep on the gas it runs and sounds right but within seconds of letting off the gas it stalls. I'm not finding a lot of help on youtube so I come to you. The master community to give me some ideas of what to check. Please be nice, I haven't worked on an old Beetle in 40 years...

Idle cut off solenoid plugged in?

Is your choke set up correctly? It could be that the screw isn't in enough to catch any of the choke butterfly steps.
