specs: 72 bus rebuilt t4 1.7, dual carbs, daily-driven in a rural area (no traffic, ~35 miles/day). The bus sat for 3 weeks.
Issue: Had a float problem causing flooding—didn’t notice until loss of power and backfiring. Saw gas/oil dripping from cylinder 4 (passenger side rear) at idle.
What I Did:
Replaced floats
Cleaned carb jets
New spark plugs (old ones looked fine—no blackening)
Valve adjustment
Oil change (had gas in oil)
Synced carbs
Now: No more gas/oil leaks, but getting white smoke from the passenger-side tailpipe. Only happens when the engine is warm—at idle and under acceleration.
Don’t want to dive down a rabbit hole… What do you all think? Could it be leftover fuel burning off, or something more serious? Appreciate any insights! |

Passenger side rear would be cylinder #2. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

A friend hit me up recently with a similar "white smoke" issue.
Granted this was on a drag car, I told him to bring it to the track where he can do full throttle blasts down the track.
On the first pass, I noted that indeed where was some, what I'll describe as white vapor, not smoke. I didn't hang it the air. The vapor was visible during acceleration runs. After two runs the white vapor dissipated and was not noted there after.
Perhaps, what you are seeing is H2O vapor or just residual fuel that got into the exhaust system when you had your carb float issue.
Drive your T4 around a bit and see if the vapor dissipates. If it hangs in the air, like oil smoke would, I'd be a little concerned. _________________ I have learned over the years.

A valve guide moving in the head will cause white smoke. |
