Something isn't right because that number would be for a 36 horse engine, and that sure isn't a 36 horse. It appears there may be something else stamped into the case that's hiding behind the nut and stud at center left. Move the camera to the right a bit and snap another picture so we can see what's in front of (to the left of) the visible number. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Exactly what I was thinking. I did a little bit more clean up and took a better angle. |

One thing, is the typeface of the letter stamps does not look right for the Bastard era. There is a dedicated thread:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=187275&
And from that thread, was this image of the serial number stamp from such an engine... note the typeface of the lettering is not the same as the one above.
(also, I have an early 61 model year normal 40HP block, from 9/60, that uses the same lettering as seen below:

Think about the possibility that a new case (without number) was used and the engine number of old (replaced) engine case was individually punched in by dealer or private owner in new spare case.
The bastard engines and also the early 34 hp engines had originally a generator stand without the 4 vertical ribs. So most probably on many engines has been worked on, from whom ever.
As far as I know, there were many kind of problems with that early "new style" engines till around end of model year 1964. (for all types of type 1, 2 and 3) |
