I’m getting ready to reinstall my stock cyclinders. They have a thin metal shim on each cyclinder. Should I put down a thin bead of sealant between the shim and bottom of cyclinder and another beam under the spacer as it fits against the case?

Or should I just put a bead under the spacer as it fits to the case?

My question is... why would you be shimming cylinders on a stock 1500?

If the shims are legitimately needed, there is no harm in a thin coat of sealant on both sides in my view.

Your cylinders should be re- ringed and nicely honed before re- installation.

Spend the $40 for a Berg "CC" kit. You can figure compression ratio if you know your combustion chamber volume and deck height. Enter the numbers into CB's handy calculator. Then you'll know why those shims are there and if they're necessary.

I usually deck old cases, have had to shim stock cylinders to get back to good (safe) deck, most cases need .01 off to get flat again, decking an old case is good insurance against leaking and getting a good seal at the head.
