Hi all,
Has anyone seen or know anything about these aftermarket air intakes that are on my 62'? I bought it a little over a month ago and have been trying to find more information about them but haven't had any luck. I was told they may have been intakes for a turbo but that's all I know about them. If you have any insight for me I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Just a previous owner hack job.
When I was in the dream stage of my Ghia restoration I considered doing something like that but it proved to be more work and cutting of the body than I was willing to do. I’m glad I didn’t now.
But to answer your question, no it isn’t a part of any kind of kit. Just someone wanting to direct more air into the engine bay.
Hopefully, it wasn’t driven or left out in the rain very much. _________________ Volkswagen!

I have seen scoops of a very similar shape behind the rear side windows of beetles, including on old school drag racers, but never seen them used on a Ghia before. They may have come from a VW shop, but I don’t think they were designed for the Ghia, though an old catalogue may prove me wrong! |

A fix that shouldn't be needed. If you leave it stock then the engineers have it worked out perfectly. If you are trying to figure out how to cool the engine then you have done something that you shouldn't. The only exception would be a super high performance application like when people make awesome drag racers or something. If your car isn't super modded then this is a fix for some other bad mod that has been made. |

Agree; there were minor variations of these Beetle side scoops- attachment flange width, shape of the front edge along the opening, etc. I installed a pair on my '60 Beetle back in the mid '70's! Since I did not cut into the body for the air to be channeled into the engine compartment, they really just trapped air...
Silverteener- is the body cut near the rear end of those scoops so that the air forced into them at least goes down into the engine compartment? |

Thanks for the info. Yes the body is cut to allow for airflow. I actually kinda like them, something different I guess, to me it makes it look more like a race car, which it may have been when it was out in California. Here it is when it was delivered to the fella I bought it from here in the Midwest.

Ghias are inherently at a disadvantage for that:
