Catching up with technology is not my thing I’m happier in the shed cutting up rusty vw’s . The 54 panel was rescued from a farm as a trailer and brought to Melbourne by a well known vw identity who loves finding barndoors and has had a few beauties.Rick sold it to me and over the years has supplied a lot of missing parts . Thanks champ . Fast forward from around 2015 . Moving houses, renovations and building other vws , covid lockdown’s and finding parts .i didn’t want to rush this build . Originally I was going to to build a container van bd. I had many parts manufactured and changed direction when a 56 panel van body came up for sale locally. It made more sense , practically and visually to make it whole again . Anyway it’s an addiction once you start and it’s got me to this point .it has the original cab ,chassis, front beam ,rear lid , lights , safari’s and glass and seats . I’ve got a new motor going back into it (1915) straight axil and macko disc brakes . The dorma roof is a recent up grade with belly pans and extra roof supports. The rear hatch has come out nice and adds to my camper theme . Sorry it’s a splash of pics and garb I’m being coached to get this far . Enjoy as much as I do with all the fabulous info and pics from all of you.cheers

That is an awesome Custom build !
You saved a lot of og parts and made it into another bus. Much better than having them lying around in sheds or cutting up for donor panels only, imho.
Well done !

Now that some actually did this i can tell y'all that i have been thinking about doing this for a long time. Ever since my 66 westy with a dormy top i had in the 90s.

only difference, i would have wanted it to look like an airstream. with the panel seams on the roof, originally i thought about doing this in paint, but nowadays i would consider a wrap, too.

I salute you for doing this.

Thanks Uli it was like cutting a rag top into a beetle . Scarey doing the first cut.The dorma was in need of a few things . To say the least was a new canvas .the steel frame inside the resin was rusted . I replaced with same tubing and re fibre glassed. Thankfully most of the hard ware was there . Thanks Stu for digging it up and getting safely to my shed . The spindles replaced with early beetle ones worked awesome ( kudos nathan ) next week 1915 is going in , fingers crossed .

I think I'd call it "Barndormie".
