my 72 has no charcoal canister. has anyone used an aftermarket one that has barbs for push pull operation? or replaced with a different vehicle type? thanks _________________ Central Jersey Volkswagen Socity |

I can’t remember where or what I got to replace mine. It might be for a Vanagon. It’s not the same shape as the old one and I had to adapt the fittings a little. It works though. It doesn’t matter that much. Hook up the required hoses and will do its thing no matter what shape it is. |

the original style in 1972 is long gone. They were steel canisters. Any used one the carbon pellets long ago stopped working. Your options are to find a used steel one if you want something original, cut it open, get some activated charcoal pellets and swap them out, then find a way to reseal it. There are threads on here where people have done that. The mid-70's canisters hung like the original steel ones but were made of plastic. They can be take apart and the carbon replaced, the filter inside duplicated, then put back together. The late 1978-79 ones were back over by the battery. Clones of those were still out there a couple years ago, and they could be used but you would have to find a way to mount one. Example of a late 1978 - 79 version for sale below. You need one line to the fan shroud, one line to air box/filter and one line to the vent from the tank.
