Hi, new to the forum and really appreciate all the info here.
This is a classic case of if it ain't broke don't fix it! I recently purchased a Cluster repair kit from GoWesty. I already had changed the cluster wiring with the SlowBridge kit but I wanted an alarm in case of oil pressure or temperature problems even though the SlowBridge kit worked perfectly fine. The GW kit forces you to cut the Vanagon wires and connect them to the GW wires with butt connectors. I followed the instructions and did this but now my temperature gauge, fuel gauge and alternator light aren't working anymore. Other lights are still working though (turn signal, dash lights etc).I tried to resplice the SlowBridge kit and reinstall new bullet connectors but still same problem. I'm thinking I probably caused a short in the Vanagon wires since both kits aren't working anymore. If I want to do an open circuit test do I simply plug my multimeter positive to each wire and negative to a ground on the chassis? For your info, I have a 1982 Diesel Westy but it has been converted to a 1.8l Jetta gas engine for the past 15 years. I still have a wire for the Glow plugs but have not plugged it in and see nothing about a Glow Plug wire in the GoWesty instructions so I left it loose since I don't have glow plugs anymore. I'm wondering if this could be the cause of my problems. Any idea of what could be wrong? Is there a specific wire that I could check continuity that could power all three items? Thanks! |

Take a few closeup photos of the wiring and post them here.
Someone may spot something that explains the issues.
The glow plug wire can be left unhooked with no worry.

Your 14 pin had 2 brown wires to 2 different spots.
What did you do with both brown wires?

Sorry if it took so long but I had a very busy week. All the wires match to the original colors except pin#6 which was blue and yellow in the original receptor and is connected to the Yellow w/Red stripe on the GW kit labeled as temperature gauge. I did a continuity test on the wires today, disconnected the battery negative wire and ran a long wire from my multimeter to the GW connectors. All the wires have continuity except for coolant temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge but I'm wondering if these might have a different ground. Fuel gauge has continuity (with a reading of 43) but the needle does not move and the gauge is brand new. Instrument lighting has continuity but the lights don't turn on once the battery is plugged back in. Any uggestions? |

I butt connected both original grounds together and connected them to pin3 on the GW kit. This is what the GW instructions ask you to do. |
