Hopefully this might help someone else out of a jam.
Theres so little info available online about these automatic transmissions that finding anything useful has been a real chore.

I had a failed transmission multifunction switch on my 1993 T4/Eurovan.
The correct replacement switch with part number 095 919 823 B has been obsolete for a good few years, so the only option available was the later one with part number 095 919 823 F.
Tried one and it would show P, R and N correctly when they were selected by the shifter but wouldn't show D until 3 was selected, it then locked itself into limp mode and needed the engine shutting off and restarting.
The fault code 00293 also showed up on a VCDS scan showing a faulty multifunction switch.
Febi Bilstein said their F suffix switch would not work in an early van and as finding a new early switch was akin to finding the holy grail it left me kind of stuck with a 2+ ton paperweight unable to be driven. Rolling Eyes

Lots and lots of hours googling (other search engines are also available Wink ) showed that VW in their infinate wisdom changed the wiring to pins 5 and 7 in 1995 when the 01P transmission and the multifunction switch 095 919 823 F were brought out.

After testing with a homemade test loom i found that by simply swapping the wires at pin 5 and 7 round it would allow the later switch to work as it should, showing each gear as it was selected and also not bringing up any fault codes or putting the transmission into limp mode.
