So I'm here trying to install my nice new IMI High Torque Starter mated to a '74 Type 1 transmission... and I've run into a snag.

There are two *possible* orientations, but neither is satisfactory. In one orientation the starter interferes with the bulge on the back of the tranny for the throw out bearing cross shaft. In the other orientation there's no surface for the special upper through-bold to interfere with to keep from turning (and the nut on the lower stud is so crowded, there isn't room for a washer).

So, which orientation is correct? Clearancing the tranny or start housing seems nuts, but what am I supposed to rig up to keep that bolt from turning when I install the motor?

(I asked for Glenn's particular attention because I know he has an IMI in his '74.)

Thanks!
Greg

FWIW, I'm running it in *this* orientation. I used a contact cement on the shoulder of the bolt to hold it in place when torquing it down...it was enough to do the job (or at least enough for the shoulder of the bolt to dig into the aluminum base of the starter and stay put).

I don't think electrickery works that way

thanks for the reply. contact cement might work, but i'd rather be able to tighten the bold against something. any other people out there with one of these high torque starters?

The amount of torque that is required to keep the bolt from rotating is very very low; once you have sufficient torque on the nut, tension on the bolt is providing enough force/friction/bite to keep the bolt from rotating.

I made a triangular shaped washer and welded it to the bottom of the bolt head.

An open end 18mm will hold the head of the bolt no problem. Just installed IMI starter and was going to replace the bolt but didn't need to. Applicable to a 67 type 1 tranny (parts installed).

I ran into that installing mine as well.
I was lucky enough to have a different through bolt with a larger head.
It looked just like the one that secured the stock SR15 starter just had a larger head. Don’t know where it came from but maybe the autostick starters had the larger headed bolt?

You can put a hose clamp on the head of the bolt to prevent it from spinning.

Or use the factory tool.
