Hi,
the auto choke makes the air intake carburator flap closed even by warm weather ( as now) as the auto choke spring is cold , when the engine is stopped .
Many engine start fail because of that fact ( by warm weather when the starter would not be needed ) , as engine became flooded with gazoline .
What is your advices on that subject please ?
Many thanks |

I'd fix the automatic choke, or wire up in the 100% open (essentially vertical) position for the summer.
One of my VWs has a single Weber on it (since 1976 !!!) and has no choke mechanism at all; but I'm in Arizona, so it takes a couple minutes to warm up in winter.

I agree... try (in order): adjust, replace, wire open.
What engine and carburetor are you running? _________________ Current Fleet:

I have run with a choke disabled always in the open position for many years. I attached 2 photos to show how I do it. In the 1st photo detach and tape up the power wire to the choke or remove the wire completely. Loosen the 3 screws and wind the choke element clockwise to open the carb butterfly and re tighten the screws. In the 2nd photo I wire the stepped lever on the throttle sideto the fuel outlet line so it stays in the open position. Hope this helps

Hi ,
Thanks , its a solution in that way , or install a manual choke with a wire from under the driver seat and a little handle like on the Citroen 2cv i had before |

You should be able to rig up a manual choke if that's what you want. You would have to put some kind of a lever where the auto choke is in the 1st picture I showed you, for the cable to pull that would control the butterfly. Good luck |

The choke is adjustable. Loosen the 3 screw and turn it. Maybe someone who did not know much thought they knew how to adjust it. Basic rule of thumb. Stone cold car, adjust the choke so there is about a 1/8” (3mm) opening on the choke plate to carb body. Then start it up and let it get up to temperature. Choke should fully open. If not, adjust for full open. _________________ Jimbo

These automatic chokes are not a "set it once and forget it" device. Even when new, the setting is a compromise between poor running when cold, or a sustained high idle until it is fully warmed up. The variables of outside temp, cold/warm restart, humidity/dew point all make it an inexact science. On top of that, the bimetal spring loses some of its range as it ages, the heater ages, and poor connections on the heater feed wires all conspire to make it change over time.
I just made sure it was clean and straight, connections were tight (especially because they are NOT fused!!), and assume some periodic adjustments as the seasons (such as we have in SoCal) change through the year. It's just one more tweak as part of the tuneup cycle. _________________ Current Fleet:

I check my bus choke fully warm running at correct idle. Shut it off and it should slightly close due to lack of engine vacuum. |
