I was tightening the link pins on my 59 beetle and when i removed the drum the inner seal was bad. Looking at the spindle it looks like a pressed on spacer that has been beat my a hammer. Is that what this is or is it the spindle? Im still new to these things so forgive my ignorance. Thanks

That is the grease seal surface. Clean it up with solvent then examine to see if it is grooved or beat up on the sealing surface or not. If it is ok on the seal surface, then it can be used again, BUT I'd put a nice chamfer on its edge where it has been hammered. You want a nice smooth chamfer so that the grease seal does not tear when installed, a sharp edge can easily tear the rubber seal upon install.

Looks like it was installed with a hammer and punch rather than using a proper round, piped shaped drift to press it on.

If bad, it can be cut off and a new one installed. You may heat the ber one to expand it, so it slides on easily, and use the correct sixed pipe to tap it on, or remove the spindle and use a press. I have tapped them on with a pipe and mallet once heated a bit. But for sure you need a nice chamfered smooth edge so in as to not tear the rubber seal lip upon install of said seal.
