Has anyone ever had the Hall sensor (the unit inside the distributor on the 1980-1984 1.9L) fail? I mean the actual unit--not broken or shorted wires. There is a lot of discussion about this, but it always seems to be damaged wiring, which I'm sure I can fix in the field if needed.

Our 1984 spends a lot of time far from help, and I've been trying to maintain a reasonable supply of spare parts. I carry a spare fuel pump, coil, cap, rotor, ignition control module, ECU, plugs, wires, and relays, but the Hall sensor is rather pricey. On the other hand, these are getting rare.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I carry a complete distributor. Indeed, you can pretty much hold the entire ignition system in one hand so why h=not have it all. The idea is: if the solution to the problem is not obvious you can just replace everything and figure it out when you get home.

I found an inexpensive source for rebuilt distributors a few years back (now no longer around) and swapped it on to the engine to be sure it was okay. It was fine so I left it there and carry my original as the spare.

There is a company in the uk who have copied all the old VW distributors including all the vanagon distributors. And yes with the correct!! socket for the hall sender. They will also supply the correct hall sender kit with correct!! Shaped socket.

Sure its www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk

I little word of advice you will possibly not find what you want on the site but if you contact Peter at [email protected] he will make you one to exact spec, or if you just need a hall sender kit with correct socket shape, they have tons of parts in stock.
I paid around £80 for a new vw t25 cu 2.0 dvda type distributor . Its not bosch but its a reasonably good copy. I don't know how well it replicates the original timing curve but my van runs great and the heads run cool . They also rebuild for around £125.

Hi,
Like everything Chinese if they spent another $5 making it ok that would be OK.
5 years driving =$500+!
I'm betting on 12 months use max out of the repro. Maybe strip it then and post pics.
Exactly what parts are used in the rebuilds also?
No bosch kits for that for decades.
Someone like vw should pull their lazy finger out and retool and remanufacture these.
In the 1960/70ies vw factory exchange did millions of units.
Maybe help the environment....again.

The updated square sockets are available to.plug in.
Or use the micro connectors (see radio harnesses) to make an adaptor harness from oval to new square distributor plug.
Then you can easily go back if you find any original correct part.
Brickwerks explains the situation....
If really clever you can get a generic hall chip unit and rivet in to original plate, keeping oval plugs.
