I found the rear bench headrest mounting kit but a US source for the original headrests in decent condition is proving hard to find. Looking around I found VW Beetle rear headrests from the 1990s-2000s online and I'm considering them. Are headrest posts universal? Will they work with the Buslab style headrest mounting kit and tubes?

I don't think they're universal. The receiver plug is specific to Vanagons and maybe a handful of other VW models. I've had good luck getting headrests from people parting out vans. Be sure to check FB marketplace as well as that seems to be the centralized place for used van parts these days (assuming you looked in the classifieds here). Might also want to check with Ralf. He has a few vans that he sells the parts from. He was great to work with getting some specific hard to find things.

From my experience having Vanagon specific headrests in the back seat is great not only for the stock look, but also because you can see through them. I have a westy, so the visibility out the back window already sucks with all the cabinetry, but I can't imagine having large solid headrests in the way. _________________ '85 Westy full camper, Subaru 2.5L, 5 speed SubiGears + 5speedbus shifter kit |

That's what I like about the VW beetle headrests, they are halo style just like the vanagon front headrests. They also cost about half the price of the oem vanagons
Thanks for the tips, I'll check those sources out. |
