Is it possible to use fixed open flaps combined with the throttle ring thermostat setup? Or will it interfere with the operation of the ring mechanism?
Also, looking for opinions…
I am almost finished rebuilding my 40hp stale air engine. Meanwhile, I just purchased a spare engine but it is a fresh air setup with very nice heater boxes.
The fan shroud on this fresh air engine I believe is aftermarket crap, there’s not even a hole for the throttle cable. I am considering keeping it fresh air, but I can’t locate a fresh air breastplate tin. I searched the classifieds and eBay.
The other option would to switch it back to stale air, but then I’m pretty sure the builder didn’t use those rings around the cylinders which the stale air engines require. _________________ A stitch in time saves nine |

Very good question there. On my 36 horse there are no flaps just the throttle ring. Not as familiar with the 40 hp.
That fan shroud should be scrapped!
Put a wanted ad in the classifieds, you will find one easily. It’s a part not often called for so it’s not listed often. _________________ Roads Scholar

I've installed both systems over the years but it's been a few years & I don't have the memory like my younger years. I've included a photo from around 5 years ago when putting my stale air system on current 40hp. It seems the linkage will be obstructed by the fresh air flaps although I've never tried.

I mocked it up with the fixed flaps, and it does seem like it will interfere. I was just wondering if it was possible. Also, I found an old thread on here and sent a PM. He has some fresh air tin he will sell to me.
Also, in my photo of the engine, where would the pre heat hose to the air cleaner go?
And does anyone have any experiences with wolfsburg west stale air heater boxes? Do they work ok? _________________ A stitch in time saves nine |

A quick read in Progressive Refinements indicates that:
The fresh air heating system started in December 1962.
The fan ring was replaced with internal flaps starting in August 1964.
So there was a number of 40 horse engines produced that used a fresh air heating system and the fan ring thermostat system. _________________

You can install one style of thermostat setup or the other, you can't have both. Honestly, I don't see where there'd be any advantage in trying to combine them. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Can you clarify what you mean by "fixed flaps?
I have a complete throttle ring on my April 64 fresh air motor. (Bottom of this page)

Trying to understand what flap your talking about to help but not familiar with the stale air system. |
I was referring to the flaps that were used after the throttle rings were phased out. Except that the flaps have been welded open. I read that the flaps, when fully open, direct the air to critical sections of the head. Since the throttle ring setup didn't have these, I figured it couldn't hurt to try! _________________ A stitch in time saves nine |
