I had some time, and I've recently been working to put my beetle back together. It helped immensely to have my husband involved when reading a wiring diagram because I have a lot of trouble keeping my place in the drawing. I decided to make a written list that might help me in the future if I'm investigating a spaghetti mess of wiring on my own later. Maybe it could help you too?

Shocked Not 'knocking' all your time and diligence spent on personally itemizing all of this, BUT.... How is this any better than referring to a good color-coded factory wiring diagram for your car's year, or a Bentley manual?

I have poor eyes, nearsighted and astigmatism, and some days refocusing at different distances can be bothersome. Specifically, I have trouble with light and reflections so sometimes trying to get in and out of dark space and see when outside is bright and sunny is a problem, especially switching back and forth from the car to the book page. It's also more difficult for me to follow the shiny-printed colors on the crowded wiring diagrams sometimes, and I often lose my place and have to retrace. It was MUCH easier for me to read the diagram and keep my finger on the component and describe it to my husband, who would confirm or deny. He's also a much better judge of color on these old dirty wires.

It may not be your thing, but it helped me get a better understanding of the whole car to do it (this is my first beetle) and now I have an additional tool if I need it. Smile

Yes, absolutely go with whatever method works best for you. I agree, the diagrams in the Bentley can be difficult to trace. I had mine enlarged to poster size (2' x 3') and laminated at Staples ... durable and MUCH easier to read for aging eyes. Smile

Thank you so much for this information. We seemingly share like vision challenges and this will help me immensely. Plus, I also have a ‘72 Super Beetle and I’ve read the ‘72’s have some unique features to their wiring harnesses.

Can you help me understand this better by explaining/deciphering a single line?

Well, just recently I was working on my fresh air box inside the trunk, behind the dash. It's a mess of dirty dusty wires back there, you know.
The components to that are the box itself with the fan inside that needs wiring for it's motor to spin, and then the switch in the dash, the knob, that you turn it on with to a low or high speed.

I found two wires paired in a loose connector: a black wire with a yellow stripe, and a black one with a red stripe.

(I have this for myself in a spreadsheet document, each component, connector and wire in a cell, so if I'm completely clueless I can sort the second column of wires just by color and see everything that might have a black wire with a yellow stripe in the whole entire car. In this case, we can make some assumptions based on the area of the center dash I'm trying to find only a few wires for a specific missing component, and the rest of my car is still mostly together)

If I think I got a wires for the fan- it's kind of in the right spot and that's what I'm hoping for, I can browse the list for my V2 fan motor. I'm actually looking for THREE wires, since you can see three rows for V2 fan motor. I need a brown one also.
I kept looking, and it turns out the brown wire comes from the fan through the harness tube and just branches off a little further up so it can go to the grounding bundle, while the striped wires go together to the switch.
Cool!

I have a couple different books which allowed me to realize that the connector these loose wires were in that you DON'T see on this list is actually fine- the Clymer's book copywritten in 72 has a connector. So I can just plug the fan wires directly in to the matching side in the connector.
Otherwise, the loose wires would have been longer so they could plug directly in to terminals on the fan box itself

One more example:
Quote:

E01 - Light switch (30) in, ro 1,5 <=, S - Fuse Box #07 out
E01 - Light switch (56) out, ws/sw 2,5 =>, J - Dimmer relay (56) in
E01 - Light switch (58 ) out, gr 1,5 =>, S - Fuse Box #2 in
E01 - Light switch (58b) out, ws/ro 0,5 =>, L10 - Instrument panel light in
E01 - Light switch (X) in, sw/ge 4,0 <=, S - Fuse Box #10 out

E01 is the light switch knob on the dash. There are five rows, so five wires carry electricity in or out from this component.

Let's say I'm a dumbo and forgot to take a picture when I took the switch out removing my dash pad. Now I've got to plug it back in, but I don't know where all the wires go! I know from my list here I'm supposed to have
A red wire
A white wire with a black stripe
A grey wire
A white wire with a red stripe
And a black wire with a yellow stripe

The sizes are also listed so I know the white and red wire will be the smallest, and the black and yellow one will be the fattest.

I know where to plug them in because of the terminal numbers. The back side of the switch has matching numbers, although they are probably SUPER tiny and might also be dirty and hard to see.

Here are photos I took when the switch was installed, just to trying to document everything before I touched anything.
To plug everything back in later, I fed the wires to my radio hole so I could see everything, then threaded the switch to the dash hole and lastly added the knob. I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of the numbers labeling the terminals. You might see here though: there are extra unused blades that my car doesn't need.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

You might also be able to notice that it looks like the grey and white wire are BOTH WHITE. They aren't. Pictures don't always work because you can't tell from the picture that the white wire even had a stripe since the store is pointed away from the camera. You'd have to twist and turn the wire in your fingers to see it. You can kind of tell in the second photo that the grey wire is darker than the white one, a little bit.
Can you see the size differences?

It does also help that the other nearby wires- that red and brown and blue, etc, is to a light. They are smaller wires and also end in tiny terminals so you know those aren't the right ones for the headlight switch.
(They are K07 the dual circuit brake warning light)

If my headlights don't work and I suspect a bad switch, I can trace power through the wires.
E01 - Light switch (30) in, ro 1,5 <=, S - Fuse Box #07 out
E01 - Light switch (X) in, sw/ge 4,0 <=, S - Fuse Box #10 out
I'll see if fuse 7 or 10 are blown. If those are good, I can poke the terminals to see if they are hot.
I know from reading the book that terminals numbered "30 supply positive polarity current directly from the battery with no intervening switch that can be used to turn it off". That should be hot all the time.
The X terminal comes from fuse 10. The only way fuse 10 gets electricity IN is from D the ignition switch. That one will only light up the test light with the key in the on position.
Then I can fiddle with the switch and see if the other terminals get powered. I don't know for a fact but since terminal 58 also has 58 b going to a light, that's probably my high beams, so 56 would be my low beams.

Anyways, I hope that helps.
Each row has the component and terminal numbers, the wire with color and size that goes in our out from it, and you trace that wire to the next component.
Then you go find that component's row to keep going on the chain, if you have to.
