|

Hi!
I was about to replace the cardboard tubes that go from the fan cover to the holes in the bodywork. I noticed that the holes don't line up properly down in the engine bay, so I can't install the tubes as I had planned.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing the misalignment?
Apologies for the poor wording — English isn't my first language, but I hope you understand.

I'm just replacing the metal inserts that go into these holes and I've found the bits on the exhaust will move to allow you line them up with the tin wear. You may have to loosen then clamp that holds them onto the heat exchanger. |

Those metal inserts in the muffler "boxes" will loosen up.
If they are REALLY old, they look like they are part of the muffler-but they DO separate a bit, enough to align;you can tilt and move them to make everything fit.
It's a trick, but not too bad. _________________ China Clippers Official 1971 Super Beetle Project!

Note that if it's a "Dansk" or "Jopex" brand aftermarket muffler, you might not be able to shift those metal shells enough to fit w/ everything else. Or will at least require some pretty major modifications to make them fit-up & connect properly -- e.g.: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=613681 _________________ 1971 Standard Beetle — fairly stock / driver

OP, those heater box "globes"/pods should move if you tap them with a long screwdriver to loosen up the rust between them and the actual exhaust pipes. Once you have the pods aligned with your engine tin breastplate's holes, insert these first- they are simply press fit into the pods. Then attach your cardboard hoses onto those pipe sections.
Do you also have the "J"-shaped pipe section that fits through the left hole in this photo? It uses the same size cardboard hose and goes up to the underside of your air cleaner. If you don't have that pipe, you should make a cover for that hole so that hot air from the exhaust does not come through into the engine compartment.

Just to point a fine point on it... the lower circle is a sheet metal shroud clamped (not welded) to the actual exhaust pipe. It can be "persuaded" to move about (rotating/sliding on the exhaust pipe) until it lines up. _________________ Current Fleet:

This. A hammer and blunt chisel helps get it into a better position. You may need to undo the brackets joining it's underside to the heat exchanger. _________________ "Men are qualified for civil liberty in exact proportion to their disposition

Yeah, I forgot that important point. Loosening it lets you finagle (that's a technical term) until all lines up well enough, the gradually tighten all the pieces of it. _________________ Current Fleet:
