Is anyone currently using these on their campmobile? Pros Cons
Opinions on this as a possible middle of the road (cost) replacement for OE?
My main concern is the weight of the campmobile vs tin top with B4s, not a ton of information about them in a campmobile application.
Thanks _________________ 87 Titian Red Westfalia 2.0 VW I4 SOHC manual Ottawa, Ontario |

I replaced our OEM shocks on our full Westy with Bilstein B6s. Immediately noticed an improvement in handling especially when driving on windy days.
Be sure to check your front bump stops and dust covers before you reuse them and also check your rear spring perches for rust while you are in there. We ended up replacing all of the above when we replaced the shocks. _________________ '74 Thing

Thanks, plan to take a good look around, my van is pretty rust free so hoping for the best it has been rust proofed several times. Front bump stops are expensive in urethane and difficult to find the rubber ones in Canada, hoping for the best. Hoping someone will chime in that uses B4s people in Europe seem to use them but not much NA information. _________________ 87 Titian Red Westfalia 2.0 VW I4 SOHC manual Ottawa, Ontario |

B4 series is a stock valved shock. So it should work just as well and to the same level as the factory shock. The B6 series is s step up from factory....somewhere from 10-20% from what I have read. I have only personally used B6 on the rear of my Golf.
They were a step up in load capacity without bottoming out but when unladen on rough dashboard they were a bit too much. With your longer wheelbase and depending in whether you are a camper and what you carry, I would bet B6 would be fine for a Vanagon. Ray |

The B4 have been fine.
The roads in the UK are rubbish. No point buying a performance car part unless suddenly you have gained 200hp.
I remember next one up B6 was about 50% more in cost and not worth it.
I've had cars with an unsettled bumpy ride. Anything like that or noisy exhausts you can't turn off will make long journeys a misery.
Running a car too low or too hard won't make it drive better in the real world. Being able to cope with potholes, kerbs and uneven campsites will. |

Hi, The B4 were fine on my camper.
Lot cheap than unnecessary B6.
I drive a lot of poor roads and got rid of cars with unsettled bumpy ride quality.
If they were bad i would notice as they would be getting on my nerves.
If you have over 200hp think about the B6. Or a sports car. Fine for German roads flat as a pool table with 50mm kerbs or the nurburgring.
I don't have lowered springs so that helps. |

Thanks for your feedback, I installed the B4s and so far am happy they meet my current needs and you are right about the cost. My van had KYBs, they were pretty much done so this is a big step up. _________________ 87 Titian Red Westfalia 2.0 VW I4 SOHC manual Ottawa, Ontario |

Would like to know how much resistance either the B4 or B6 offer on compression, have yet the find a shock that has the same level of compression as the factory shocks. |
