Hi guys, in my 1967 Beetle I noticed a gap of about 1 cm behind the steering wheel.
On my other 1961 Beetle this gap is a few millimeters.
Do you think this is normal? What could it depend on?
Thanks

Are you aware that the signal assembly's position on the column is adjustable? There's a screw on the underside that can be loosened so the housing can be moved up closer to the steering wheel. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

You can adjust the turn signal switch to close the gap, but only so much. That might be too much before it doesn't have enough grip on the tube.
The steering column tube might be pushed too far into the firewall, causing the gap.
To adjust, remove the two bolts holding on the column tube clamp and try to slide the tube along with the switch attached toward the steering wheel. Once you have the gap reduced to where it should be, reinstall the clamp and adjust the switch so the switch arm in in the right position.
Could also be that the steering column was removed from the steering box at some point and not seated all the way down on the steering box shaft. There is some play on splined shaft where the clamp bolt goes through which would cause the gap. It doesn't hurt anything as the bolt either fits or it doesn't. The easiest solution is one of the above procedures. _________________ Chris
