Hi folks.
Anybody knows (with pictures) how to install the assist strap on a 1972 VW Super Beetle? I have the strap and the coat hanger cover and I can see the two vertical holes on the car, but don't know how to install. It seems that the the cover not fitting the strap. Any ideas?

Google "ankle strap installation" for more info.

Hi folks.
I'm trying to install side chrome moldings on my 72 Super Beetle. The car had been applied putty and had been painted. There are supposed holes where the clips for the chrome moldings go. I could find under the front hood where the holes and the broken clips were, but I have no idea where these holes for the clips are on the door or the rear quarter panels. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Remove the rear "door card" and have a look for the rear quarter. If the holes have bondo in them you'll see the extruded sausage. If it's welded then you'll probably see the nib of the weld. Use that distance from the waist line indent to find the correct heights. Then do the same with the front door card although this will be harder to get to. You can probably just use the rear measurement to reproduce to the front.
So long as you have the correct distance to the waist line you can always just drill new holes without even trying to line up with the old holes. The clips will slide to anywhere.
AFAIK the chrome strips were at slightly different heights depending on year model. So long as they line up. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

thank you so much. I think this will work as you described. I have to drill holes, I think. I measured the thickness of the clip head that goes into the hole with calipers. It is 4mm. So, I have to find a 4mm drill bit and line up the holes below the waist line. thanks again. I have to start with lineup of the front hood and line everything up with that. thanks again. |

This will likely offend you, but if this gives you significant trouble, you may want to stay away from an oil change, valve adjustment, or spark plug change. Because this should be quite straightforward.
The two screws go through the strap holes, then through the seat belt hook, and into the VW body. Then the cover slips over that, see photo from the 1971 owner's manual.

To make the molding install easier before you drill do some measurements. On one end of each panel put a pencil mark at the distance down from the indent you found when you took off the rear seat trim panel(aka door card) . Take the molding to be installed on that panel and place it with the top edge aligned with the marks you made. Extend the pencil line from one end to the other. Drill your holes along this line. This will insure you follow any curvature in the molding length. Good luck |

WIth apologies to Cusser et al...
I am doing a similar task now;1971 Super Beetle.
I put the headliner in already, and don't know just where to locate the screw holes for the assist straps. They are there, I just can't see 'em. Got all the parts. Can someone help or direct me?
Maybe you have a bug in the earlier stages of putting in the headliner, or yours doesn't have it one yet? Pictures or measurements?
Otherwise, it's gonna just be "poke and pray".
Did that with the visor installations-it wasn't too appealing, or pretty.
Just get me in the ballpark. I need the "A" and "B" distance...in metrics (mm) please if possible. After all, it is a VW...

I did the same thing, you can feel the screw holes if you poke your pinky finger around. Just give it some prodding with your pinky, then confirm with a phillips screwdriver.
The place it goes is also a bit of a flat platform. You should feel the ridge towards the rear of the car a few mm behind the screw holes. _________________ 1972 Super Beetle, Parked until adequate restoration funding is acquired in restoration!

Great advice! Apologies to alidabiri for somewhat hi-jacking his thread, but....
I guess I needed a bit of a push too, so got that as well. For those who may come after me, and with the same requests.
"A" (see previous post) is 30 mm. You don't need "B". As noted above, you can CLEARLY see/feel the outlines of the little "platform", so.... bada bing bada boom,
And finished.. Yes it's the original, 50+ years old like the rest of the car... And I like it. _________________ China Clippers Official 1971 Super Beetle Project!
