|
|
Hopefully this hasn't been covered before, I did a search and couldn't find anything...
I'm working on a 66 Convertible restoration and the previous owner, who shall remain nameless, picked it clean for parts for another project.
Can I use a generic inexpensive Sedan Hood Release cable? Will it work or do I need to track down the expensive locking hood release knob?
I don't really care too much about being super original or picky, I just want it to work. So many parts are missing it's going to cost a small fortune to replace so yes I am cutting corners! _________________ 2019 Golf Alltrack, '65 Ghia Coupe Restoration in Progress |

Hey I have not owned a convertible bug, but from just knowing what they look like, it seems they are most likely relatively the same mechanics wise, besides the obvious convertible look. I don't see why a sedan cable would make a difference, as it doesn't involve anything with the actual convertible, but just the hood. Again not a convertible bug expert, but it seems you should be able to interchange the cables. |

the only difference is the cabrio hood release knob can be locked to prevent people reaching into the car and accessing luggage etc when the top is down. other than that it is basically a knob on a cable which acts on the latch so a saloon set-up should work but might need some changes where the knob lock fitted.

Sedan Hood Release cable can be used without a problem, provided that you weld/glue a piece of metal pipe to extend the existing one, mimicking the sedan. _________________ The glory never gets old, just need new paint.

You literally could use a $15 tractor choke cable and make it work
If you have the handle... its just solid cable..
If you need a handle...here is a cheap one ?

There are a few differences between the Sedan and Convertible hood release handles.
Sedan the cable is crimped into the handle.
The Convertibles the cable is pinned or screw attached to the handle. Karmann just cut the Sedan cable and pinned it to the Convertible handle
Location and locking ability for Convertibles.
The Convertible handle is longer to reach the moved Sedan cable tubing.
As advised by Disc, Youd have to add some tubing to make a Sedan handle more user friendly.
