I fixed the odometer had the parts 3d printed to hold the gear in place. Installed BUT I did not realise the fog light switch has three main spades I didn't take a picture of the one connection.
Doh
I don't know if it isupposed to be on spade 1 and 2 or 1 and 3 or 2 and 3? Electrical is not my thiing. So please talk to me in lay mans terms? I am in the process of reinstalling and that is the one thing I cannot figure out.

consider-
1) adding a picture of the switch and wiring in question. This is especially needed here since fog lights are usually not standard equipment.
2) changing the title to something like "Fog Light switch - wiring help request"
The way you wrote this post, you will get Odometer experts and the electrical experts may not visit since they won't know that is what you need. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

nice re-title.
yes, the link Kamz pointed out has a BUNCH of good detail
....and working from your picture -
those connectors and probably wiring is aftermarket
you connected them on the terminals away from each other which should work per the other link since it shoudl work "1+2" front and rear .... I'd try moving your connector without the tape to the center position and see what happens. looks like you have the 12+ terminal connected with the taped connector.
If you want to confirm you have power to the connectors. verify with a voltmeter or test light and which ever one has power would be your +12v wire (likely your taped one)
with things modified its always a crap shoot unless you trace the wires to something you can be sure of. so take my suggestion with a grain of salt....but if it worked before, the terminals next to each other are likely to work.
let us know what you try and how things go for you. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace

Thanks again. I will do that now that I have the handy dandy Automotive book you recommended as well as the new Bentley hard cover which includes my 1990 instead of the one that came with it which covers to 1989. I will put the other one up for sale which will help cover the cost of the other one. I just oredered printed a delete plate for my dash ashtray in abs so I can mount my 9 inch screen for Android auto gps etc. I have a new multi meter as well which I have been using. _________________ 1990 Vanagon GL purchased fall of 2024

You can use your new multimeter to determine which poles of the fog light switch are connected when your switch is in the on position by using the resistance feature. Place the fog light switch in the on position without any wires connected, and then connect the multimeter leads to 2 of the poles. if the resistance reading between 2 poles is 0 ohm (or very close to it), power would be flowing between them. If the ohm reading is very large (mega ohms) or OL (over limit) then there is no electrical connection and power will not flow. Test all the pairs of poles with your fog light switch in each position to determine which pole are connected for each setting of the fog light switch. Once you determine the 2 poles that are connected when your fog light switch is in the on position and not connected when in off position, you can connect the wires to those poles and that should work to control your fog lights. _________________ 83.5 Westfalia, GW 2.3L w/ GW EFI, 4 speed |
