Hi - I'm having trouble fitting a new fan belt to my car - 1959 30hp. The belt I bought is 9.5 x 905mm which is listed as being suitable. However it is shorter than the belt currently fitted. I understand the principle to fitting the belt and have managed to do it but only by using all 11 shims that I have and even then it is very tight with no give at all. Anyone else had this problem? I have found a belt by Optibelt which is 9.6 x 912mm may be that would be suitable?

Do you still have the old belt that fit properly? If so, compare it to the new one to see how much longer it is and use that to guide you to a better fitting size.

So, 900mm is supposed to be the right size. But, 905 is too small? We have a contradiction!

You're running into belt size problems because you have a 40hp generator pulley on your 36hp engine. The correct 36hp generator pulley is smaller diameter.

Oh OK thanks - very strange. I will just have to try and get a slightly longer belt.
