Hope someone can help. I have a 66 VW bug with a stock 1300cc engine. The bug starts nice and runs good for the first 20 minutes or so, but once the engine is worm and I come to a stop I can feel the engine wants to shut off unless I accelerate, and once I take off and I’m on 1st and 2nd the engine seems to hesitate. And if I go uphill it absolutely has no power. Any suggestions anybody?
Thank you,
Albert |

False air. Also known as a vacum leak. That would be my guess.
So many more questions come to mind. Oil change? Valve adjustment? Air filter? Fuel filter? Plugs? Timing? _________________ Jimbo

Hi Jim. Thank you very much for your suggestions. I’ve recently done an oil change and put in a new fuel filter. I’ll be adjusting the valves and check the other things you suggested. The only thing is I have to do some research of how to check for a vacuum leak, any suggestions? Thanks again for the help it’s much appreciated brother!!! Will keep you posted.

Mine was almost stalling when I came to a stop as well. I was told it was because the preheat was blocked up and after it is running to check the manifold right under your carb to see if it was cold. Mine was ice cold and had condensation after driving 20-30 minutes. I'm in the process of cleaning it out now and can't believe how bad it was blocked up considering the small amount I drive the car. You might check that. |

I had a bug many years ago with similar symptoms and it had me scratching my head for a while. It turned out to be a failing ignition coil. Good luck Bob |

Any fuel leaking from the carb when you pop the lid after driving? _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”

You should check out the choke operation. If manual, make sure it opens all the way and when shut it closes down to 90%, about 1/4” of air space left open. If electric, you should check that as the coil warms up, that it slowly opens the choke.
Vacum leaks are found using a smoke machine or a can of accelerant. Accelerant if used needs to be used with caution. Using a smoke machine, stick it into the carb throat and see where the smoke comes out. _________________ Jimbo

Hey Jimbo thanks again. I will add to the things to check. I’m going to go
Down the list and start eliminating things.
Thank you
