after a long time thinking about it, I decided to dive into the build of a 1300 using mainly WW components...I find that WW is giving us the "aficionados" an oportunity that we cannot ignore...
I am starting from a decent condition case I had around (best of three)
of course first thing was to clean it and start inspection and measurements
all looks sound, so I decided to start buying components to have a short block

I have cases and cases of 1300 piston and cylinder sets. They have the VW symbol in the molds ground down.
The heads are harder to find. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Those WW Okrasa kits are popular. I have a lot of customers who run them with a 010.
The more projects the better. My wife says I have too many cars because I can only drive one at a time. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

right, this puppet is waiting his chance
I followed with crankshaft measurements,
which consistently give me 20 microns under nominal (remember 1 thou = 25.4 microns) on all journals. I am unable to measure deviation on roundness or any taper.
I will be using STD-STD sintermetal bearings. Read good and bad comments of them but is what I have and used them in other engines..
To measure journal clearance I used three different ways, and tried to make sense of them.
First the bearing alone,
then the common way of fitting the bearing on the case and tightening to nominal
and also fit the crankshat and look for side play,
at the end all measurements where consistent, in the worst case bearings are below 10 microns out-of-roundness (which I think is ok) and between 60 and 80 microns over nominal. That results in a 100 microns max clearance. Which is in the high side according to this
but still I think should be ok. _________________ Aug '58 pressed bumper SO23

next step, tried to add the cam gear but did the mistake to rely on an empi reproduction
Heated it up to 200 deg C on oil
but it was impossible to fit it to the crankshaft. For comparison I used an original VW one and with much less heat was sliding in smoothly.
Looking to the gear, the inside looked poorly machined with some amount of taper. I will use a original VW even if I need to pay gold for it
conclusion: stay away from this empi repro _________________ Aug '58 pressed bumper SO23

Wait are you using a empi 1600cc time gear set these are not interchangeable with the 36hp gears ..only the 1600cc straight cut gearscould be used on 36hp cases .
If your looking for a 36hp crank time gear new ones are sold link below ...

thanks Jerry!
indeed I was using a 36hp version
https://kaeferland-shop.de/en/Drive-System/Engine-...W-25-30-PS
i tried to "fix" it by doing a slight machining but didnt work as intended, however I could do some rough gear check
now I am waiting for an original german cam gear _________________ Aug '58 pressed bumper SO23

If the gears are not compatible "to big" you only have to machine the cam gear down ..rotate crank and cam together if the camshaft pops yup the gap is to big / tight smaller cam gear is needed if you rotate it and the camshaft doesn't pop up it maybe good but you have to check the backlash to make sure it's not to much if it is a bigger cam gear is needed backlach for a 36hp gears is set to .0.001" to/or 0.002. most of the new cam gears are a little over size do that you can have it machined to your specs ...most new parts are not a bolt on and go could be a head ache at times to send it out if to someone unless you have the skills to turn down the gear it's just extra time ether way ... but if your vary lucky sometimes new cam gear can just be a bolt on no machine work but that's rare on my part I seem to have bad luck I guess ...vw 1600cc straight cut gears on a 36hp for me is a better choice but that's my preference but some guys hate the sound of them after a while can get to you but I see no problem on my end with them ..... |

finally I got an original VW gear for 36hp, what a difference it made!
Heating to 180 C and a good smack was more than enough to get it in
The contact surface is even now and measured 35 microns backlash
I am using the new WW edition of the standard cam and so far looks very well made. On here I measured 20 micron max out of round
Only thing it puzzles me is that all cam journals are 10 microns oversize
