While the stroke was the same for 1600, 1500, and 1300cc engines, were the cranks exactly the same?

Shouldn’t the 1600 crank be weighted differently than a 1300 to account for the higher reciprocating masses of the pistons?[/b]

it has always been my understanding that the crank, flywheel and clutch are balanced together. since the weight of the rods, pistons, rings, wrist pins etc are directly opposite of one another in the engine it is key to get those as closely matched in pairs as possible. 1&3 and 2&4 respectively so they cancel one another out. meaning as long as those are balanced to one another , it should have no appreciable influence on the balance of the crank.
if someone has a better explanation or can correct me be my guest.

There are slight differences in the oil hole drillings. The newer ones have a sort of elongated slot on the surface of the journals. There may be other minor differences too.

The stock cranks did not have counterweights therefore there would be nothing to change when changing displacement. VW counted on the opposing pistons and rods to cancel each other's weight out. Which they do.. sort of...

The 1300 crank was made to accept the 6 volt flywheel. So if my memory serves me correctly you could not bolt a 12 volt flywheel to it.
