Hello All,
My son purchased a 1983 Air Cooled Vanagon with a California Exhaust (elongated heater box with catalytic converter etc...) The Vanagon is surprisingly original but was missing the engine tins under the push rod tubes. We were able to replace the right/ passenger side as it is the more or less the same as my Bay Window Type 4. I am having trouble figuring out what the other side looks like. Does anyone have a photo of the left/ driver's side piece? Is it the same as a California Emissions Bay window Type 4?

Nice looking Van!

You may wish to ask this question on the Bay Window forum of Samba. I reckon that the stock non California tin may be cut, and or bent to fit maybe with an additional bracket perhaps?

That tin is important for two reasons.

1..Better engine cooling as the lower tin does provide for a venturi effect to help air flow over the cylinders and head at higher road speed.

2. Impact protection to the delicate pushrod tubes and push rods.

Thanks! Yep, well aware that piece is important for the reasons you outlined. We are not driving it other than short test drives around the neighborhood until we get that sorted out. Ultimately, we may have to modify something to work. I have a lot of Bay Window pieces. Would still like to see what the OG piece looks like to keep an eye out for one and or to see what we may have to fab up.

No, the Vanagon vertical piece is different, and so is the horizontal piece on other Type 4 probably , I just ran into the same BS, I had the wrong vertical piece from possibly a Bay Window bus and couldn't figure out why the correct horizontal piece wouldn't attach to it.

Thanks. Judging by the photo we do have the correct warm air duct piece. I ‘m not sure the lower piece is correct though. There is a crossover pipe that drops down a bit with California Exhaust and I think it should have a bump out to accommodate that. I’ve found a piece in the classifieds I think will work and ordered it. I’ll let you know what we find out and take pictures of it installed if it works out.

Could you post pics before and after installation please?

I can't find any drawing about the CA models, just Federal, which is apparently what I have pictured.

It seems mike the 2 tins on the far right on your picture are for the left side, like mine, but slightly different, so that would be 3 models?

Will do. It is at a mechanic’s right now but when we get it home I’ll post a bunch of pictures.
