Hi, I know there have been many topics on this but hoping someone can give me straight answer.

I just received a rebuilt freeway flyer transaxle. I put it in and filled it with Lucas 80W-90 gear oil(car was level) until oil came out the side. The next day I had leaks from the side plates (both sides) of the trans.

The bottle of oil says nothing about it being synthetic.

Additionally, I called the builder and they asked how much I put in. This was between 2.5 and 3 quarts.

They told me this is too much, I should do 1.5 quarts as the additional weight will make it leak. I know this to be false.

I was hoping I am using the wrong oil and someone can point me in the right direction.

On level ground, fill it until the lube runs out of the fill hole.

Side plates, which lart do you refer to, the steel parts to which the boots are attached? The cast magnesium parts to which the steel is attached?

I doubt oil type you used is the cause.

From the 1966 thru 1969 Factory Bentley manual...

The standard manual transmission requires 6.3 US pints for initial fill, and 5.3 US pints for refill ( 1 US pint remains inside upon draining), AND..
The fill level should come up to the filler hole

Assure the vent is not blocked.

The steel plates that mount to the side. I am actually seeing the oil on the nuts that tighten down the plate. Not leaking out the side of the plate.

I was not aware there is a vent hole, i assume this is located on the top of the trans?

I don't believe this is the nose cone for your transmission, but you can see where it is typically found. Near impossible to get to with the transmission installed. Since just rebuilt, it wouldn't be clogged up internally, but maybe they put some tape over the opening or stuck a plug in it to keep out contaminants during shipping?

A stiff bent steel wire can be used to clear the vent hole. A flash light and mirror can be used to assist, it is tucked up high near the body.

A blocked vent shouldn't cause trans fluid to leak out of the side plates. Out of the input or axle shaft seals yes, but not the side plates. The only reason the side plates would leak is if they are poorly sealed.
