Can you guys post some of your gas tank pics? I'm looking for new ideas on size and location. Thanks! |

10 gallon jaz cell. Foam filled. Roll over valve in the vent, rubber flap on the fill neck. Opaque enough to see the fuel level.

I baffled, sumped and guaged a SS 11gal tank...
And then shoved it down as far as I could over the trans for a lower center of gravity.

How is this for redneck? 5 gallon boat tank ratchet strapped to the floor just behind the front beam. Undo the fuel line, pop the ratchet strap and throw it in the trunk of the car to fill next time we go to town. Puts more weight on the front tires and is plenty of fuel for an old guy trail riding locally.
It won't win "Best of Show" for you but it's very convenient and the coyotes, ground squirrels and crows could care less. When they see that red tank they know it's time to scoot or they will catch the dreaded lead poisoning! _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

If money was no object....I'd do what Cbeck has, clean, and functional...and safe.
But, if you look in the dictionary under "Cheap-Bastard", you'll see my picture.
Therefore, I did what OrangeCrusher (possibly a Broncos fan?) did, but with Freon tanks....FREE. I'd make them out of the small ones....cut them w/a SAbre saw....you cut the ends out of one, and cut the center out of the others (making a baffle, of sorts) and stick it in there. 3 tanks hold about 10-11 gals (enough for a 3 day week-end at the dunes, and plenty of gas for a weekend at the beach). 2 tanks is about 6 gals. You braze it together and braze on an Ell, and thread in a ball valve from the HWare store.
If you really felt like engineering it....you could put on a clear-tubed gas gage, like on an airplane, where you see the fuel level in a clear plastic tube.
Install it as low in the frame as you can get it. The Center of Gravity....I liked mine in the rear, for the best traction going up hills. But, suit yourself. |

I will admit, my 11 gallon tank is way overkill. But then everybody who knows me knows I over engineer everything to death. My vw buddy swung by last weekend and was telling me about his conversation with someone else describing me as someone who over engineers everything. lol It kinda shocked me for a second even though I know it's true. But I was thinking, is that a compliment or a criticism? Guess it depends. I like simple too, it just never turns out that way in the end. Probably being raised by my Italian mother worrying all the time showing through. _________________ Brian H.

Brian, since you said that 11 gallons "may" be an overkill, does that mean that my 12.5 gallon tank will be more than enough for a day's outing on the dunes without refueling??? My buggy came with a 7 gallon tank, but it had several dents and major scratches. So, it went bye bye on Marketplace. The guy needed an overflow tank for his wood stove boiler...

Guess I also have too much time on my hands. Leaving Gunnison Tuesday morning after labor day and taking the long way home thru Grand Junction to catch I-70 east all the way home. My 7.3 powerstroke had been out there multiple times, this is the first time towing my 30 trailer out there with my 6.7 ps. _________________ My cut in half and rebuild thread

Uh yeah. I've gone all day in the woods. I think i filled up at one point just because the group i was with needed gas. I have a hard time using it up and i usually have old gas sitting in the tank. I don't get out often enough to make use of that 11 gallons. Maybe that will change once I'm done with my latest upgrades. (If i had a dollar for everytime I've said that...). The fuel injected engine i have in that buggy may get better mileage than a VW though. _________________ Brian H.

Old photo, but this is the 5 gallon cell I'm running for now. It has a typical sending unit wired to a fuel level gauge on the dash and a small sumped outlet going to the external pump.
I may consider swapping to a larger tank over the Winter; haven't decided yet. Thus far, it's been fine.

11 gals is to much. It will last for a 3 day weekend at Glamis.
7-8 is enough for 2 days. |

I guess you can always fill a big tank half way. Then you have the capacity if you need it. _________________ Brian H.

Wow, all this talk of "six gallons for running the trails for two days", etc. has me feeling special. I have a twelve gallon tank behind the seats, a five gallon tank up front and a two, a half gallon pony tank strapped to the side and I still worry about running out of fuel on a long off road trip. Course, I'm running a hostile old school Ford V6 with a Holley Flat tracker carb so it's no wonder my gas mileage is less than most. |

I made my tank out of two soda tanks from a pizza joint. I never added a gauge but made a motorcycle-style petcock so I have a reserve. Do not go off road or on the beach much anymore, but it is street legal.

All of your tanks look great, I'm going to keep my round tank and add a sender and flip up cap. Cbeck I've always liked your car, it looks great. We're sort of local, I'm out by wentzville. |
