Hello all, I’ve been away for a while. Work is trying to run me into the ground.
N Dug out the Rail from winter storage today.Needs to get State Inspected this week. It’s 5 days past due. Anyway, took it for a drive around the block to check brake function, steering, tires, all the good stuff.Brought it back and blew all the leaves and winter debris off the front end. As I passed over the steering box, oil sprayed out of box. Not like squirting out, more like it got siphoned out by the Venturi effect of a high speed wind going over a hole.
Sure enough, there’s an open hole in my box. Anyone know what goes there? Is it a plug? Threaded rot pushed in?
Thanks guys, I always appreciate the great advice I get here.
Bob

VW started putting plastic type plugs there in later boxes. Early boxes had a square head pipe plug with just one hole.
you could drill and tap holes and install pipe plugs in the two holes.

When I did the washer trick to my steering box I drilled and tapped mine and drained the oil and pumped the box full of Mobil 1 red Syn grease, it does not run out if the seal blows just make sure to loosen one of the bolts if you try to add more grease. you can just see it in the picture.

looks like you still need to fish some of it out .

its a small plastic type push in plug , NOS parts in the classifieds has em aka Heimilich , its 3 dollars n change for original .

its just a push in fit they get hard brittle break after so many decades , i recently replaced mine when it cracked to pieces .
