2WD ‘89 Vanagon with 2.5 Subaru straight drive
Longer day on the highway today and discovered a humming sound coming from the back. The sound occurs while decelerating and idling. So when in neutral and coasting there is a humming which seems to have a cadence with the wheels/tires. When I go into gear and accelerate it stops. Any ideas?
My tires are quite bald and I was planning on getting new tires this week but seems unlikely that is the issue because it’s only happening in neutral. Thanks _________________ mojavmusic.com |

When do you ever go into neutral long enough to hear a humming sound? _________________ Jim Crowther

Could still be the tires. Adding or removing load will change the harmonics of rotating objects because of a long list of reasons.
Change the tires because you need to do that anyway.
Change the oil in the trans because you need to do that anyway.
How old is your clutch, pilot bearing, and throw out bearing? _________________ '87 Syncro Ferric Oxyhydroxide Superleggera Edition

Subaru straight drive. Does that mean Subaru engine, clutch and transaxle? |
