I'm just curious if anybody has used the Solex 30 AAIP for a VW vintage speed engine? I have no real plans on using it, but it's kind of a cool cousin looking carb to the NDIX.
The base and bolt pattern lines up with NDIX carbs, so a NDIX manifold would probably work.
How suitable it is, I don't know. It was mainly used on 6 and 8 cyl cars around the 30's-50's, for example BMW 326/ 327/ 328 1936-41, Mercedes 1940 and different models Tatra 1939-50.

In a museum in Germany ..I don't know if its the vw or porsche museum.... its one of my all time dream engines this vw tatra ohc engine and the porsche type 367 aka peter max muller engine ... are my all time favorite engines ..and don't forget the denzel engine ...wish I could own all of them ..yes Im dreaming but let me dream lol...
This 1952 vw tatra 1.1 70hp ohc engine....its basically uses tatra t87 ohc heads / cam towers ,chain driven ..uses solex 30AAIP carbs 64x75 bore / stroke ...don't know much since not many know about it other than that..i know it was in a vw / special raced and was successful .....if I was rich I would somehow buy it and put it to use.. i don't like it just sitting there it should be in a vw showing it potential and not just that it would make other vw look out the box and build similar builds or new exotic heads not the same o same o builds ...... |

Thanks for the background story Jerry. Very good looking engine with a great hp to displacement ratio. _________________ Sebastian Gaeta

Thanks Jerry, very cool. I tried to google it and found almost nothing more:
I think this is the museum the pictures came from: Automuseum Prototyp (https://prototyp-hamburg.de/)
Volkswagen-Tatra Motor - 1953
This racing engine was designed by Erich Käppler in Grosswaltersdorf (Saxonia) in 1952/53. He modified a VW engine with two cylinder heads of a Tatra 87. Furthermore he installed a chain-driven overhead cam-shaft (OHC) so that the engine output was 70 hp. From 1953 till 1955 Käppler participated in races within the 1100 cc class and came third in 1954 and second place in 1954 within the class championship.
Erich Käppler Halle-Saale 1953. (In his "self-build" vw, fitted with this engine?)

The single carb build was nice!
Some more pictures for referense (cleaned of the worst dirt)
When cleaning I noticed (seen in 1st picture) that it looks like someone has drilled a hole in to the butterfly, some crude DIY idle air intake? But why, I thougt the lever was for it!? I blame the signs of overtightning the air filter on the same PO

If you heat up the top with a propane torch or map gas ...and use a little hammer tap it to put back to its shape .. you can straighten it up ...but don't hit it to hard or it will break ..heat it up and with baby taps will work ..it wont be 100% but it will look better than what it is right now ...looks to me someone dropped that carb on the floor or threw something heavy on top of it ..thats not from over tightening the air filter .....

You're right, call it a "brain fart" as I didn't think how the filter was probably clamped on. My brain just thought it looked like "screw" marks on the rim and didn't start processing.
