I recently started changing out the water pump on my '89 carat, once I got it off I took the advice of others on this forum and decided to replace the oil cooler hoses. I also needed to replace the oil cooler pipe as the threads have always been a little off making filter changes more difficult than necessary.

Waiting for the new oil cooler hoses delayed the project and now I am looking at putting it all back together and hoping someone has advice on the best order for reinstalling everything.

I think this would be the best order (with the pump, oil cooler, and oil cooler pipe all removed):

1. Bolt on new water pump
2. connect new oil cooler hoses to loose oil cooler
3. attach oil cooler hose to connection on water pump
4. install oil cooler pipe through oil cooler (currently just connected by hoses)
5. bolt oil cooler down to block
6. install the rest of the water pump connections (coolant to thermostat housing, etc..)

Having done that job many years ago, that work sequence appears to be correct.

I only want to add the importance of using a new, quality o-ring at the block-to-oil-cooler interface. There are some substandard products out there that need to be avoided. I think VanCafe and GoWesty supply the quality ones.
