Hello! Last week I ordered a custom GBE oil fill breather, and after the fact I have some concerns. Below is a pic of my present set-up. I understand the GBE breather is functionally better, but now it seems I'm going to be running breather hoses from my valve covers around the front of the fan shroud somehow, and I'm afraid it's going to clutter up the look. I'm trying to clean up my engine bay, not make it look more "busy." Do any of you have pics for how you mounted and run your breather hoses? I'd appreciate looking at what some others did. Peace. BTW, I no longer have fresh air hoses running from the fan shroud.

I went with the "cluttered" look.

Turnswrenches, that doesn't look cluttered at all. Everything serves a purpose. Nice engine! _________________ 1973 Karmann Ghia

I agree. But, it's not a Berg breather. _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!

I have the same style carb linkage and my Gene Berg breather wouldn't fit. I have the crossbar in the lower hole and it interferes with the vertical AN fitting on the breather. I think it would fit if the crossbar were installed in the upper hole though. _________________ 36hp '56 European DeLuxe oval

If running vc breathers just use the 1&2 side and not the 3&4 side since that side fills up with oil anyways. Check out the old Muffler Mike Sheldon video with the window valve covers.
And your engine looks good already :D |

Are you asking me? If so, are you talking about the breather in the pic I posted, or the one from Berg that's on the way? _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!

Here's a CB breather and linkage.

You want clutter, I will show you clutter. I have used many after market breathers on my bugs and sqbk's and some were just overkill.
I then just ran the hose to the air cleaner, but after having my carbs rebuilt, Rick Hunt the rebuilder said not to run the hose directly to the air cleaner, the oil will mess up the carb. So I ran it out to the atmosphere and started to smell oil fumes.
OK built my own small breather out of an aftermarket oil filler tube. Works great, been driving it for months and no oil just fumes going into the carb.
The oil and fumes goes up, but cannot exit and drips back down into the case.
Keep in mind what VW used as breathers, they were very small. For larger engines I understand larger breathers, my breather would probably explode, ha.

The Berg breather provides a nice way to add oil and let the engine breath. I thought it was bulky so I fabbed a filler and used a Clyde Berg breather.

Looking good.
Your engine bay looks great. However my eye is drawn to the wiring and crimps. Maybe clean those up in your pursuit for less clutter. Sorry, that wasn’t your question, just thinking out loud.
Mine engine bay is a “Junk Drawer” full of stuff
I dig looking at all these hi-performance engines. One of these days, I might fool around and go for it. _________________ Keep on Busin'

Re. wiring...I totally agree with you! But, I don't know what to do about it. I need wiring for oil pressure switch, oil pressure gauge, oil temp switch, oil temp gauge, head temp gauge, etc., etc., etc.! Those wires NEED to be there. I don't know how to clean that up. Now, add breather hoses coming around too, and....
You see my dilemma.
First World problems, for sure. _________________ Please check my '67 sedan project progress!

Yes, I was asking if you are keeping the breather box on the firewall and simply adding the berg filler/breather? I have a berg filler/breather and it used one of those V8 valve cover breather that is used as an intake for the air when run with a PVC system. I had my fuel pump block off and my 1/2 valve cover vented to it. I found that there simply was not enough breathing going on and the V8 style breather would leave a mist under it like a mild shower head.
Here is a pic of that setup, I have since painted the distributor cap
I do like Glenn's berg breather style better that has a stock style oil filler cap and then a 19mm hose you can send out of the engine compartment. Bonus points to Bones 53s custom filler setup and distributor! _________________ 1957 Oval rag

Here is one I put in my bus. I believe they are a little shorter. It also has the vent cap. Its the same as a v8 uses. It has a vent cap so I capped the inputs.
