1972 1200 with an alternator conversion. Occasionally the generator light doesn't come on when starting the car. Below picture is when the key is turned to the first position. This seems to happen when the engine has previously been running and coincides with the starter motor also not working until it's cooled down a bit. If I turn the key I get a click, but the starter doesn't turn. I know I can rebuild the starter to help loosing up the solenoid, but are these two issues related and if so, where do I need to start looking to fix the generator light issue?
Thanks.

FIRST thing is to confirm that the oil pressure light and the charging light have not been switched at the speedometer head !!!
Pull the wire off the oil pressure sender and make sure that the oil light then goes off. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Yep, they are wired correctly. I've a teed off oil pressure gauge and the oil light doesn't come on until this drops to below 1 bar. |

VW used two types of alternators.
The early style which is known as AL78. It has 4-wire connections at the alternator.
The later and more common AL82 model only has 2-wire connections at the alternator. I'm gonna guess you have this style?
With your ignition switch ON (engine not running) and the GEN lamp OFF... walk around to the engine, disconnect the D+ wire from the alternator. If the wire connections are dirty, clean them so the wire and terminal make a good connection. Touch the loose end of the wire to the body of the alternator while you look thru the window to see if the GEN light turns ON. This confirms your GEN lamp wiring, bulb and circuit are all working normally.
If the lamp does not turn ON you have a disconnect somewhere between the speedometer and the D+ terminal. Check for a bad bulb, dirty/loose connections.
If the GEN lamp does turn ON, you have an internal failure in the alternator. _________________ AshMan40
