|
|
Was replacing a dying ignition switch on my 84 non-power steering Westy and set the steering wheel aside on top of a toolbox. Turned around & heard a loud crash. Box full of tools and impact sockets now laying on the ground everywhere with the steering wheel right in the middle. Unfortunately the horn button got demolished. Looking for advice as I couldn't find anything on line for a button, used or new. Found a few whole steering wheels but none looked like the original, and most of those were in Europe. I wish there were some local junkyards near here where I could maybe scrounge an old Cabriolet, GTI or Jetta or similar wheel from, but there's almost no salvage yards left anywhere near here. Plus those wheels are all smaller diameter. Any ideas or recommendations?

If you have all the bits just glue it all back together? I broke mine in two some years ago, and you can hardly see the join. Can't remember what glue I used though, sorry. _________________ Jim Crowther

Thanks guys.
fxr - I'm currently letting a bunch of epoxy set up to see how it holds together. It may not be pretty, but neither is the rest of the van.
dhaavers - That's wild that you found that on the classifieds here. That's the first place I looked and that one never showed up in a search for "steering wheel". Most I saw were with the small center horn, probably with power steering or from later years. The link you sent is great. Even at $120 it's not bad if my epoxy doesn't work out.
Thanks again to all! |

I could see epoxy setting up nice & sturdy, add some fiberglass filaments on the back side for insurance & repaint the face to minimize obvious flaws…would save you $120.
…but as I’ve said before, I’m CHEAP!
