|

My wife and I are traveling Europe for the next month. I had originaly planned to do some 3D modeling of some Vanagon parts during the down time while traveling. I borrowed a 3D scanner from a buddy and had a stripped down syncro tin top chassis in my drive way all ready to be scanned. Of course, life happed and I ran out of time to grab some scans.
I was wondering if anyone had any 3D scans of any Vanagon parts? The .stl files alone of the scan meshes would be ideal. As a thank you to the Vanagon community, any files sent to me will be turned into 3-D models which I will post on this thread for freesies.
I am specifically looking for a scan of the engine bay and a scan of the instrument cluster. Any other parts are welcome...
Nowadays will 3D printing becoming so readily available and affordable, it would be great to start getting some of the parts recreated in CAD. Imagine sending off an order to a website like PCB Way and getting a newly 3D printed instrument cluster in the mail a week later! |

Ok just a wish list but here’s a what and a why list:
First the roof over the front seats. Why? To see if late model factory sun roof can be grafted in. Slide back and pop up.
Door handles and locks. Why? I’d love to make a full set of locks with a blade style key. And ingrave “ VANGON” like the 944 handles
I like the instrument cluster too. Maybe bring extend the right side to the middle of the van to get more use of that space.?
Have a great vacation!! _________________ 87 gl powerd buy 2.5subaru

What’s the difference between a 3D scan and a 3D model in CAD? Trying to understand your request. |

A scan will capture the relationship geometry very accurately. It's not an end result, but it can be used to make a 3D model millimeter perfect. You can use a 3D scan to locate screw holes, for example, and then build a model that bolts in perfectly. _________________ '87 Syncro Ferric Oxyhydroxide Superleggera Edition

Mostly the number of points and triangles and precision and cleanliness of the model. A 3D scan is a wonderful tool, and can be very useful for testing fit virtually, but a model created in CAD will be MUCH neater and cleaner.

For example, couple of representative scans I did. As said, scanner creates a point cloud type file, points and vertices , stl file.
The real work is taking that file, which can be large depending on the resolution, and changing it to a solid model, ie a stp file
Cheers

This is a good example of the 3d scan in use. These guys made their own v10 40 valve out of a truck engine and stuffed it into a Lincoln. They 3d scanned the underside to build the exhaust and fine tune the sound _________________ 87 gl powerd buy 2.5subaru

I thought I read somewhere newer iPhone's have the ability to 3D scan? With an app of course. Can anyone confirm?

It has to have Lidar. Though you can do photogrammetry with a non-lidar phone. There are some apps that will "scan" without it - but the quality is quite poor.
I think Polycam is the app lidar people are using. _________________ 1991 Twin Slider VR6

Only the Pro models do, starting with the 12 Pro. I have a 16 Pro, it works fairly well, though a dedicated scanner will handily beat it.

This is a great idea! Digital is the future. I'm old school but realize that this is how things are made and particularly documented now days.
If you guys who are familiar with this can get this going I'm sure old farts like myself will educate ourselves and come around.
I just completed an engine swap and have little documentation to share with community. Other then pictures that I took as I was fabing up what I thought would fit. |
