Which lift point would be the safest location? I want to raise rear end on a recently purchased '63 Beetle. My first classic and don't want to break something. I've found conflicting answers while searching.

I have always used (50 plus years) the small circled wishbone area with a block of wood between it and the jack. In the rear the bottom of the shock housings is also good if you want 2 points. Good luck-Bob |

I use the bottom shock 'arms' or under the torsion bar 'plates'. Then again I use two jacks. When I only had one, I put it under the Y 'Yoke' but it ended up getting dented that's why I started using two jacks. Never jack it up using the engine/transaxle cross support. _________________ Daily driver: '69 Baja owned 45 yrs - Plan B: '72 Ghia

You can use the yoke jacking point just forward of the trans to lift the car.
The trick is, place a 1.5' 2x6" on the floor jack center pad, to spread the load.
I do that all the time when I need to get under one of my beetles. _________________ I have learned over the years.

This is why it's common to find the rear trans bracket all bent up. _________________

So, why is this so wrong? I've had my car for 30 plus years and no issue that I'm aware of. _________________ 63 T1 Ragtop Gulf Blue

Yes, but I can buy another one using the classifieds here on theSamba. It is a bit more of a PITA if you bend the frame tunnel under in front of the torsion housings. _________________

Just to the rear of the small circle in the op photos with a stout wood block like 2x8 where you span the 2 rear horns will not bend anything and has worked for me for over 50 years. |

It's easier to use a piece of wood as described above to spread the load at the front of the trans than it is to replace the rear trans bracket. _________________
