I found an old, grimy, greasy 28 PICT in a box. I don't know how I ended up with it; it was probably at a swap meeting 30 years ago. I do have a 64 with the same carb, so I may have picked it up as a spare.
I decided to clean it up and give it a refresh. After taking it apart, I noticed it was missing that brass L-shaped tube above the throat of the carb. Nonetheless, I proceeded with the cleanup, first taking everything apart, then dipping it in Chem-Dip. I brushed everything clean, and it came out looking pretty good. After it was all clean, I noticed a hairline crack in the body that the L-shaped tube would fit into. That may explain the missing part.
After going through the entire process, it is unlikely that I will use the carb. But the whole process was beneficial in helping me better understand the carb. I read all the manuals posted here, and I watched several YouTube videos. If I need to work on the carb in my '64, my newfound knowledge should pay dividends.

Yeah, definitely not a waste of time or effort. You learned some new things and grew in the process. This will absolutely help you as you continue your ownership journey.
Keep up the great work! |

Very cool! I was raised in the trades learning by being shown, followed by a short few sentences on what I did wrong. Then told how to fix it, during the fixing by me! My father, grandfather and 4 uncles all had a hand in my shaping! The biggest benefit to my learning process, when I was very young, was that it was all hands on experience, in real time.
That upbringing has lead me down a path with no fear in repairing all sorts of stuff. I was an ASE Master technician for years at an independent VW shop, when the economy sucks through the late 80s and into the 90s. In 2000, I returned to the trades to help out my father. He and I built a business which I still own and run. And everyday I am trouble shooting, disassembling and repairing things I have never seen before. It is just all from experience and knowing how shit comes apart!
You started on the path. Keep being a student and learn everything you can! Life is never boring then and my job (the one that pays the bills) gives me rewards far beyond money! I have made great friends and meet some very cool people during my appointments. I never would have had my current opportunities in life if I never tried! Knowing that basic thought has propelled me through the years in a positive direction! Plus, I am never bored, EVER! Always learning something new! _________________ Jimbo

As previous posters have said it was a good learning experience for you. You can now take one apart and refurbish it in the future. Good luck-Bob |

Could the "L" shaped tube be acquired and JBWeld-ed in? _________________ 73 bus. Org. 1700 with dual Weber 40 idfs, bus header with Empi qp muffler, CB magnaspark 2 " ready to run kit". |

The L-shaped tube (formally known as a spray jet) can be purchased from some European carb houses, and here. And I can JB Weld the hairline crack. I don't need the carb, but I might do it anyway and see how it works out. |
