I need to replace the rubber e-brake boot but I can't get it over the plastic e-brake handle cover. How is this cover removed?

The boot should stretch over the plastic grip? The plastic grip is held at two points. A plastic pin right in front of a sprig clip portion that recesses into the open part of the metal. Pull the pin, lift the spring tab - should come off. Take the button off first.

Where is the pin located on the handle? The handle is still in the car. I have removed the button and can get the cover to wiggle slightly but don't really see or feel a pin or spring.

Underneath by your pinky while holding the grip.

Thanks a bunch, those pics explain a lot. I have the late model and though I could feel the small white piece sticking out of the back of the handle but didn't realize the tab was there.

Just tried to get it off with no luck. Do you push in the white circle tab or the piece sticking out the back?

I'm a little lost. I've removed/replaced many a boot w/o removing the handle.
Since you're replacing the boot, just cut the old one.
Then warm the replacement in warm water, and slide on. Grease it if you have to.

The old boot is already off. The plastic handle cover is a lot bigger than the hole in the boot. I will try warming it up with a hair dryer and see if i can get it to stretch a bit. as tight as it is now i don't even think KY will help. Laughing

I tried the warm water idea and warming it up with a hair dryer but the boot will not slip over the plastic handle cover. I have put several boots on handles without the plastic covers but never one with the cover.

I cant seem to remove the plastic handle, any ideas? The white tab (like in the photo above) is pushed in even with the bottom of the handle and doesn't seem to want to push in any further but, the grip still wont come off.

Ok this is turning into a OJ leather glove deal.

So you are saying that your new boot is not elastic enough to be pulled over the handle? Every boot I have ever installed has been. It should be made of a flexible stretchy rubberized material. If you put WD40 on the handle then the cover should slip right on there like a greased pig through a pine knot hole.

The boot is pretty stiff, more like a rubber truck mat. So you're saying that it should go over the plastic grip and I shouldn't have to remove it?

Ok, I'll try an give it a go once I get home. I thought that y'all were misunderstanding that the grip was not off and that i was only trying to get it over the 1/2" wide metal handle. Wink

Why would, say, a person want to get a pig through a pine knot hole?

If I have to explain it - it aint funny then.

If you've ever owned pigs, they like to get out of their pens. My guess is the saying is as if the little bastards are so cleaver they could squeeze through a pine hole knot - assuming a fence that makes their pen was made of pine boards?

If da boot don't fit, you must not quit. Or something like that. Laughing

Makes me wonder about the boot itself. Where did you get it? Visible part numbers?

Maybe there's some help here:

I just wanted to say thanks for the help. I finally got back to this and got the boot on. Here are the quick and easy steps in case someone else has a problem.

1. Soak the boot in very hot water for around 10 minutes.
2. Put a very small drop of KY (or other water based lube).
3. Slip the boot over the handle with the greatest of ease!

Seriously, between the hot water loosening up the almost plastic like rubber on the but and the bit of go juice, the boot almost went on by itself.

Thanks again for the help.
