Start with your regular car insurance company. More money that the botique agencies but you can drive it. _________________ Larry in OB

try State Farm - my buggy is titled as a regular car - pretty reasonable, but not near as cheap as the "collectible" insurance. I can drive the hell out of it. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.
Rosie 65 bug - My mostly stock daily driver.
Woodie 69 VW woodie (Hot VWs 7/12).
"John's car" 64 VW woodie - The first ever
Maxine 61 Cal-look bug - Ex-wifes car.
66 bug project - Real patina & Suby conversion

Does State Farm know it's not really a Volkswagen car?

Try this company:

My buddy has the full coverage deal on his '60 through them.
No limit on mileage if I remember right. _________________ Gary

I have a couple of old (...I mean antique) VWs insured with USAA as regular drivers. No restrictions. The only drawback is if one is totalled, they will only give "book" value, not stated value. If you want stated value and really low rates, the tradeoff is limited mileage and other restrictions provided under a collector's policy. Unfortunately, we can't have our cake and eat it, too . _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Wow! I just checked their website and it says you can choose your mileage. I'm gonna check them out a little further. Thanks for the post, Glenn. This may be the cake-and-eat-it-too thing we're looking for ! |
I just compared them to Hagerty.
Rates are virtually identical. |

I thought the drawback to Hagerty was limited mileage and/or no pleasure use? I'll have to re-check Hagerty. Also, Classic's website doesnt provide the policy limitations/restrictions. I'll need to get both to compare the companies side-by-side and against American, which is on a couple of other cars of mine. Another thing that's important is the rating of the company as well as overall customer satisfaction (prompt customer service, claims handling, etc.) _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Kent, I didn't mean that Hagerty was better.
But they do not have mileage restrictions as they know that a collector
will use the car for more than parades. They haven't asked me for odometer readings, nor have they "audited" same.
All they ask is that you have another car as a daily driver and keep the collector cars in a locked garage. (oh-- they exclude coverage on a race track).
And they want one photograph of the car
I have AGREED VALUE (this is important) of $10,000 on the '61 Ghia;
$7,000 on the '66 Beetle; and $18,000 on the MG. for $263/year total.
Zero deductable collision and comp.
$300,000 liability
You can phone them and talk to an actual human being, if you wish
You can |

Thanks for the info, Chuck. I got a quote from Classic on just 5 of the cars and the quote for stated value was $292.90. That's insane! (Like cheap, insane!) I pay over $1500 every 6 months for the same cars - and that's with USAA! And it doesnt include my other cars ! (Hmmmm.... perhaps that's insane given these alternative classic auto insurance companies ) _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

re question about whether insurance company is aware that a they are insuring buggy instead of a bug, as the car ius titled. Yes - they have pics of the car and it would be really stupid to try to tell them otherwise. Would be interesting to explain to the insurance adjuster that the impact converted the metal into fiberglas LOL. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.

in the late 80s, I had both a 71 SB and a 69 Karmann Ghia totaled with USAA as my auto insurance - they gave me everything I had receipts for minus like 30%. it shocked me. I don't know if they'd do that now, though - they seem to have changed a bit
my 2 cents on insurance - in NJ, you can "only drive" 3000 miles unless you register the car as a normal car. I believe that's about the same as my Hagarty "allows" me.
Hagarty (and some other company I can't remember) basically didn't give a sh*t about what they were insuring - they insure an amount of money. In this case, what you think your car is worth -- say $10000. As long as you are 25+, have a locked garage and will go under 3000 miles per year, that's all the classic car insurance companies ask. It's only a few hundred per year for $10-20K insurance. |

Yes, they still do that. They will prorate certain items provided you have a receipt. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

I insure my drivers, a couple of houses, etc with the Farm, but they wanted certified appraisals, blah blah blah on the collectors cars.
Lazy sloth that I am, I took the easy route and went with Hagerty.
But, then, I don't drive my antique cars thirty or forty thousand miles a year. |

Who provides classic insurance without requiring a locked garage? Here a carport is better than a garage unless the garage is refrigerated during the hot 6 months _________________ 71 Superbug
