I suffered an engine failure when the fuel pumps internal screws, springs and valves came completely apart inside the pump. It was running perfectly up until the failure. During the rebuild I discovered the push rod was only 104 mm long. The specs say it should be 108 mm. The spacer block is the correct thickness. One rebuilder said the pump should not have worked at all. I'm about to put it back in the car with hopes it will run as nicely as it did before.
There seems to be a difference of opinion on whether to apply a little grease to the lever inside the lower pump (the pump rebuilder), or "pack" it with axel grease. (John Muir's Idiot book). I'm sure there are more than two opinions and I'd like to hear all of them. The pump is below the distributor.

I’ve been packing them for over fifty years and have never had any issues.

The correct fuel pump rod length for a 36hp pump is 104.25mm and the 108mm rod is used on upright dome tops and square top fuel pumps.

I recommend packing a bit of grease deep inside the rocker, it's pin and spring to lubricate them. The rocker pin and the rockers are hardened steel but grease still helps prevent wear. I've seen some pretty heavily worn pins/rockers in 36hp pumps that had zero grease.

I found a picture of a heavily worn pin and rocker from a 36hp pump rebuild I did recently. Again, these two parts are hardened steel yet grease would have helped prevent some of this wear.

Anytime there is metal on metal it is always a good idea to have some sort of lubricant if possible.
