Two more questions if I may. Firstly what do current experienced engine builders do about sealing the oil pump to the case and oil pump to cover (a Gene Berg cast iron relief cover). That is, paper gaskets only or paper with sealer and if sealer, which sealer?
Secondly, can an oil pump be fitted to a case that has already been sealed and if so best method (I know, I know, but case was sealed up many months ago prior to reading on here Brian e's advice in Murts engine build thread) |

I use gasket and same anaerobic sealer I use on the case.
nothing wrong with changing / installing pump after the case is together, why would there be? no different than if you wanted to pull the pump to change it out or to advance or retard the cam..
you can loosen the outer case bolts near the oil pump if need be too _________________ "how am i supposed to torque the rear wheel nut to 250 ft lbs??? " - clonebug
An interesting thing happens in forums where everyone starts parroting the same thing and "common knowledge" takes over.
Most experts aren't. |

Also check pump O.D. should be 70mm exactly, many aftermarket ones are undersize, may need to O ring it, also use the thinnest gasket on the cover, most sealers work, stay away from silicone. _________________ 73 Type 181

I recommend the Berg o-ringed oil pump, but not using their heavy cast iron cover. I don’t like the weight and the material expansion being different than the pump housing.
Backside of pump use gasket and sealant of choice
Pump cover…no sealant |
