My 73 Super Beetle has an odd thump when coasting. It runs great, but when I let off the gas and start braking, you can hear a thump coming from the rear. Not from the motor but it's definitely in the back end. Any ideas?

A constant thumping or a single thump?

Is it when you start braking and keep braking or after you let up off the brakes?

Are your rear shoes somehow wonky?

It's not in the brakes. Does it when coasting, braking or whatever.

Coasting in neutral, or in gear.

Coasting in neutral, or in gear.

You can only coast out of gear in neutral or with the clutch pedal depressed. The engine under a load, or engine braking, is not coasting.

Oh, nothing. Just saying that the only time you can coast is in neutral.
