I have a US, 1989 2.1L Vanagon, Wolfsburg. Not a camper.
The rear heater blower fan is not activating.
Also, I had a lot of white smoke and sweet smell the last time I tried to use it.
I searched, but can't find the wiring for the rear heater in Bentley.
The closest thing I've found is 97.156, but even there I don't the fan motor.
Could someone please point me to the correct Bentley page for the rear heater motor in my van?
Thank you.

This is from a 1986 Van, but may be of help trace 148

the sweet smell and white smoke indicate a coolant leak, heater core, heater valve, hoses or such are leaky.

Note the manual heater valve located at the under seat, it must be open to get heat.

If the fan bearing be dried up no more lube, the fan motor will need to work extra hard to turn, and this will eventually burn out the motor. You may smell a hot electrical plastic type smell, which will be the insulation on the fan motor windings over heating. Do NOT run the fan if you get that smell! instead take the fan assembly apart and lubricate the bearings. A coolant leak with the sweet smell can mask the burning winding insulation smell. If the winding insulation gets destroyed from over heat, the motor will be ruined Sad
My front fan, the fresh air fan on the dash started to get that over heating motor winding smell, so I stopped using that fan until I lubricate it. I pulled the knob off that fan switch to prevent me from turning it on. The front fan is a pain to get out, buried in the dash, the rear fan is easy. Ill get around to it sometime, but for until then I aint running it.

Let us know what your fan issue is.

The rear heater fan is there in your 88/89 diagram but VW did't use the word "rear" in the description.

Across the very bottom of each diagram page are sequential numbers for what are called current tracks.
Find the current tracks numbered from 148 to 152 in the 88/89 diagrams.
Look straight up the page from those numbers and find the "Warm Air Blower".
That is the rear underseat heater fan.

In my 80-91 Bentley it is shown on page 97.134

In my 1986 Book the rear heater fan is called "Warm Air Blower" on trace 148.

The dash fan is called "Fresh Air Fan"

odd naming convention, but it is what it is.
