I just purchased a 74 Super beetle and stripped down the engine to fix a bunch of oil leaks. I tested the engine compression, and it was 140, 135, 145, 145 which was higher than expected. When I opened up the engine, I found that it has 88mm jugs.
How do I tell if this engine has the thin wall or thick wall cylinders. Or to put it differently, what should the heads and case bores be? |

Per GeneBerg's website*, an 88 mm "slip-in" cylinder will fit into the same bore in the cylinder head as the stock 85.5 mm cylinder: 93.8 mm diameter. Engine case would be same as for stock 85.5 mm cylinder- 90 mm. The larger piston fits inside a cylinder that has thinner walls than for 85.5's.
The 88 mm "thick wall" cylinder needs the same head bore as for a 90.5 mm cylinder: 96 mm. Engine case is same as for stock 85.5 mm- 90 mm.
The 88 mm "thick wall top & bottom" was also available as per my3bugs- head @ 96 mm, case @ same as 90.5 mm - 96 mm.
69 mm stroke x 88 mm bore is usually measured as 1679 cc.
