I suspect the hood on my 62 was replaced at some point as it does not seem to have the 2 slots to hold the Wolfsburg crest.
Can anyone guide me as to how I can properly identify the hood?
Is there a template to cut the holes so I can install the crest?

From the gallery
Note that hoods w/crest use a slightly different shorter trim strip down the center. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

The long hood trim piece has different end when used with hood crest than without. and that long trim piece is shorter, so you NEED to get the center trim piece made for the crest.
there are also difference in the VW emblem mounted high up on top of hood for different years, so check out the hood you got, it may or may not be right for that. _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

Here is a search for hood info. Some of it contradicts other info. So beware.
My original very early 1961 Bug, serial number under 150 for 1961 was bought new by my Dad, hood is original. Has not raised four tab VW emblem, and hood crest. But some say 61 had the later emblem. Not all changes are strictly by year model, some changes made during the year, so then you have to look at build date, not year model.
There is talk of hinge mount difference, how edge is rolled, VW emblem, four tab or thee pin, flat or raised, crest or no crest, springs or prop arm, etc....
links worth investigating (using forum search)....

again you need to check build date.
You need the short trim strip for use with the crest. You will need to fill one of the trim strip holes evidently, although it maybe hidden by the crest. (but needs sealing to prevent leaks)
I have read warning about crest mounting holes, you got to cut them right, else they may hang out past the crest, as they are on the edge of the crest.
UGH!!!!!!! DO YOUR RESEARCH, CHECK MULTIBLE SOURCES. NOT ALL INFO IS DEAD ACCURATE. WHAT IS CORRECT FOR MY EARLY 61 IS NOT CORRECT FOR LATE 61 FOR INSTANCE
Good Luck!!!! _________________ Sorry About That Chief.
