Kia ora! I have a SO69/5 Paris with a lifting roof (hubdach). I’ve owned it now for 16 years. The lifting roof came with what look like non-std tie-down straps installed. They look like helmet straps to me. And while they work well, they take forever to undo and redo. I’d love to find out what the bus should have and restore them to that. The lid itself is fibreglass and the upper most mounts appear to be factory installed. Maybe the lower part is too?
Is there anyone else out there in samba-land that has the same/similar roof who could show me what mine should look like?
Many thanks _________________ 1970 Type 2

Odd...., every small top Westy I've had used the standard rubber bungee hold downs, but they went into a hook with 2 vertically oriented screws, here's an aftermarket example in the wrong color: https://www.busdepot.com/231068013a
If there are no previous holes hiding behind those footmans loops I'm thinking they once used the rear hook for the early pop top there: https://www.busdepot.com/j13144
It would certainly reduce the risk of digging holes in your scalp on the protruding hook.
Here's an OG one as used in a full sized top:

Hi
What you have looks very functional. But I would agree that the double D rings are less than ideal.
It would be easy to copy the straps with ladder lock style nylon buckles, and some proper, thinner ,nylon webbing.Which would be easier to thread.
Guess that's not original though. _________________ 73 bus. Org. 1700 with dual Weber 40 idfs, bus header with Empi qp muffler, CB magnaspark 2 " ready to run kit". |

Interesting. Thanks guys, all good info.
I found these: https://serial-kombi.com/en/s/roof-handle-westfalia-8-1967-7-1973-13-5cm-yellow-mounts-and-screws/
They look like they might work. Maybe my ‘footman’ loops are original (cant seen any old screw holes behind them) and the straps are the only replaced part. And Im missing the rubber handles and their clips? Which is what that last drawing from rsbadura looks like too. _________________ 1970 Type 2

They are original -
see in my pdf part 16 in the list and in the drawing called in German "Lakai-Krampe" (Lakai=lackey/footman and Krampe= cleat/staple/cramp/loop).
Not only in the Westfalia installation instruction I posted, also in the VW parts microfiche for Campmobile, Mod. 74 - 79, part 17 with VW order# 231 067 949:
I'm sorry, I don't currently have any older documents on this topic in my collection... these are also difficult and expensive to find.
Many pictures, brochures, and instructions show the large pop-up roofs fixed at the front or later at rear –
even though Westfalia and VW offered up to 4 roof options (without extra roof/small as yours and mine/long side-mounted/long front- or rear-mounted).

Superb level of detail Rolph. Danke.
So if i can find the correct rubber bungee part, it will be like OG.
Sidenote, I have 3 latch points on the small hubdach. Your diagrams appear to indicate there were sometimes only 2, on the centreline front and rear.
I kind of like how secure my roof is - we do get a lot of strong crosswinds here. But Im interested to know what the original config might have been. _________________ 1970 Type 2
